Practice Profile

The practice was established over 50 years ago and moved to its present premises in 1985 with extensions built in 1995 and 1998.

We are a large, but friendly practice with a list size of approximately 14,500 working from high quality, spacious, purpose-built premises. We are based in the centre of the pleasant market and county town of Carmarthen, in the picturesque Towy Valley. We also serve a large surrounding rural area. We are within easy reach of the beautiful West Wales coastline and with excellent road and rail links with the rest of the U.K. and Ireland.

There is good local schooling both through the medium of Welsh and English in the public and private sectors.

There is a thriving sporting environment in Rugby, Cricket and Soccer with a large Leisure Centre with a swimming pool, squash courts, all-weather playing field, tennis courts and running track. There are also plenty of opportunities for golf, fishing and sailing.

We are a highly motivated team with the delivery of high quality service to our patients at the top of our agenda, and we are dedicated to a successful National Health Service.

We operate a personal list system as we feel this provides the best quality of family medicine.

We run morning and afternoon surgeries 5 days a week by an appointment system and a number of additional services

  • On site phlebotomy service
  • Diabetic Clinic
  • Asthma & COPD Clinic
  • Coronary Heart Disease Clinic
  • Hypertension Clinic
  • Well Woman Clinic
  • Baby Clinic

We are a highly computerised practice both clinically and administratively and are paper-light with extensive use of document scanning.

We have good access to the local District General Hospital 1 mile away and to Mental Health Services at a Resource Centre half a mile away.

We have several outside commitments including:

  • Course Co-ordinator for GP Vocational Training Scheme.
  • The Associate Advisor for General Practice (West Wales region)
  • The Chair of the Primary Care Effectiveness Team (formerly the M.A.A.G.) which is the support group for Clinical Governance.

We are a General Practitioner Vocational Training Practice with three Registered Trainers. We usually have one or two GP Registrars training at one time.

We have a commitment to train medical students for the College of Medicine, Post Graduate Dept, Swansea University.

At times there are also student nurses, health visitors, midwives and a physiotherapist undergoing training within the practice.

The management structure of the Practice is in a Board of Directors style, with individual GP partners taking on a Directors role with defined responsibilities within the practice.

The Directorships are:

  1. Chair
  2. Human Resources
  3. Clinical Governance
  4. I.C.T.
  5. Commissioning & Continuing Professional & Practice Development
  6. Finance
